After an
accident, whether a motor vehicle accident, a fall, an injury at work,
etc. you should do the following:
| 1. |
Your health
is most important. Seek
medical attention as soon as possible. |
| 2. |
Obtain
names, addresses, and phone numbers of all persons who were present. |
| 3. |
Do not
discuss the matter with anyone other than your doctor or lawyer. |
| 4. |
Do not give
statements to an insurance adjuster or investigator without first
consulting with your lawyer. Frequently
insurance adjusters call and state that as part of their routine
procedures they need to tape-record your statement.
Do not do this without consulting a lawyer.
Normally it is not necessary.
Further, statements made in good faith can be used against you.
If you forget something, or phrase something slightly different
than you intended this can, and likely will, be misconstrued and used
against you later on. |
| 5. |
Obtain a
lawyer as soon as possible. Evidence
needs to be preserved. Photos
need to be taken. Someone
with expertise, and on your side, needs to give advice, not the insurance
adjuster. Someone with
expertise needs to provide proper advice on where to submit your medical
bills.
